Winging It

This week the 5th graders got their hands dirty dissecting a chicken wing as they continued their study of the human body. The students were surprised to find that the muscular and skeletal parts of the human arm are much like that of a chicken wing. Working in pairs, the students dissected the chicken wing in order to identify the bicep, tricep, humerus, ulna, and radius. They also learned about cartilage, ligaments, and tendons and saw first hand how all  these aspects combine to make the wing move. They will all think twice before enjoying chicken wings for dinner after this experience!
