The French Philosopher, Voltaire, once said that the key to happiness was to first plant and then tend your garden. For the past five years High School Teacher, Martha Newman and her students have been doing just that.

They have planted and tended an organic garden. The produce has been harvested and sold, primarily to staff. Over time their customers have spread into the wider community. Proceeds from the garden are reinvested in the project going forward.

The produce has included lettuce, peppers, cabbage, collards, broccoli, corn, tomatoes, as well as yellow, acorn, butternut and spaghetti squash.

According to Mrs. Newman, “staff has contributed plants and donated time in the garden,” causing her to think that the garden is, “starting to get a corporative feel.”

The garden and greenhouse are located just behind the high school.
