Arapahoe Charter School Board
Calls for Caution
Arapahoe Charter School Board of Directors unanimously approved continuing the plan currently in place for all grades. This current plan provides in person classes two days a week (Monday and Tuesday or Thursday and Friday) with Wednesdays as a virtual day. Also available for students is a totally virtual program.
The decision came despite Gov. Roy Cooper’s announcement that beginning Oct. 5th, schools could move to a 4- or 5-day in person schedule for grades Kindergarten-5th grade. According to Chris Watson, ACS Executive Director Director, the decision reflects the Board’s concern for moving too quickly in a still volatile health crisis.
“Everyone would love to return to the school day as we know it,” said Mr. Watson. “But the Board’s first concern is and always will be the well-being of our student body, staff and their families.”
The decision includes a provision to reevaluate the options at each meeting based on the latest data concerning the status of Covid in the County.
“We realize the importance of moving slowly in these times and look forward to transitioning to our traditional schedule as soon as possible,” said Mr. Watson.
Free Meals For Kids
In the Spring, P-EBT (Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer) legislation gave benefits to families of children who received free or reduced price meals under the Richard B. Russell National School Lunch Act funds. The program has ended for us since there have been changes to the criteria and ACS families will not be eligible this time around. It all has to do with the fact that we did not go full remote for all students. Families with questions about their P-EBT card should call the NC EBT Call Center at 1-866-719-0141.
The good news is that ACS continues to offer meal deliveries to key pick-up points throughout three counties. If you have not signed up for meal deliveries, you still have that option.
In addition to providing free breakfast and lunch when students are physically in school, ACS is also providing breakfast and lunch to students who want it for the days they are not physically in school.
Meals for Group A students will be sent home on buses Tuesdays.
Meals for Group B students and car riders will be sent home Thursdays.
Meals will be available for Virtual students at the following locations on Mondays (if there is a holiday on Monday, deliveries will be on Wednesday):
Havelock in the AMC Movie Theater parking lot (11-11:45 am)
New Bern/Bridgeton in the Bridgeton Food Lion parking lot (12:15-1 pm)
Aurora in the Piggly Wiggly parking lot (1:30-2 pm)
Remember these meals are only available to those who have signed up beforehand. Due to production schedules, there is a one week delay for new sign ups.

Welcome back!
We are busy adjusting to this new and different school year, especially our meal program which we know is important to our ACS students and families. Beginning Monday, we are improving our plan by providing the freshest meals possible as well as a hot entree on most days. These take home meals must be picked up at the school daily between the hours of 11:30 and 1:30 pm.
Parents and guardians are to use the entrance on the far left side of the building – it is marked “cafeteria.” Please be sure to have the student’s lunch number. These meals are available Monday through Friday for Virtual Learners. Group A will be provided these take home meals on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and Group B on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Please remember Group A and B meals are only for pick-up on the aforementioned days.

ACS Announces Reopening Plan
On behalf of Arapahoe Charter School Board of Directors, we thank you for your continued patience and support during these unprecedented times. In accordance with Gov. Cooper’s recent announcement, our administrators have prepared a plan to safely open our classrooms on August 10. Our path to reopening is centered on a caring and supportive educational environment for our students while being diligent of everyone’s health, wellness, and safety.
Over the past week, surveys were sent to parents and staff to guide us in developing strategies to help shape our 2020-2021 school year. The findings of the survey confirmed that a portion of our parents prefer in person learning while others favor total remote learning. We are pleased to offer both options.
ACS will follow a blended model that meets the Governor’s requirements for no more than 50% occupancy by combining face to face and remote instruction.
Under our plan, students will either be placed in A group or B group. “A” group will attend face-to-face on Monday/Tuesday, and “B” group will attend on Thursday/Friday. The days when students are not assigned to be on campus they will have online instruction and assignments to complete from home.
On face to face days, students will follow a regular school schedule which will include core instruction, encore classes, Title, EC, and related services.
Parents preferring a remote-only plan will need to register online. The registration form will be posted soon.
A letter will go out to all parents early next week. It will include detailed information about your child’s group assignment, grade level, teacher and schedule. We encourage our parents to frequently visit our webpage and follow our social media for up to date and accurate information. We look forward to welcoming our students back for the 2020-2021 school year.

PARENT SURVEY
Please know we are working diligently to finalize our plan for the upcoming school year. The input you provide in this survey will help us develop a safe and workable plan that meets the needs of our students and families.
Please help us by completing this survey by noon on Monday, July 20th.
Re-Opening Details Are Coming Soon
Now that Governor Cooper has made his determination about how schools may open we are finalizing our plan. As always, our top priority is the safety and well-being of our students, families, and staff.
We will be sharing details of our re-opening plan and reaching out to all our ACS families, in the near future.
We are still on track to open on August 10!
ACS Reading Rockstars
ACS is launching a new initiative to increase literacy engagement outside the traditional school setting. We have created a Facebook group to provide literacy information and activities throughout the school year and during breaks. Our first activity will be Shark Week, which will run July 12 through 18 in our “Reading Rockstars” Facebook group. The activities and videos will remain in the group until Aug 1st at which time they will be archived. Throughout Shark Week, we will be posting links to shark videos, going live with book recommendations and literacy activities, and going live with a step by step simple shark craft that can be done at home and more. There will be cameos from some of your favorite ACS teachers and staff. Families are encouraged to share photos of them participating in Shark Week, and some of these photos will be shared on the school Facebook page, school website, and in other publicity materials. You can join the group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/743530649782856/?ref=share

As a small school, we are ready to move forward as soon as the announcement is made and will keep our Bobcat families up to date on developments.

Put Your Child In The Picture To Succeed
Arapahoe Charter School is still accepting applications for the 2020 – 2021 school year in grades K through 9.
Since our opening in 1997 we have recognized that each child is uniquely different and may, at times, need special instruction and attention. We strive to meet the needs of our diverse community, sparking the learning desires of “below average students” at risk of giving up on learning, challenging “average students” to do their very best, and motivating “above average students” to rise to their full potential.

Apply Now for the 2020-2021 School Year!
Put Your Child In The Picture To Succeed
Arapahoe Charter School is now accepting applications for the 2020 – 2021 school year in grades K through 9.
We know the Coronavirus Virus is on everyone’s mind.
Ours too.
Each day we are learning more about this virus especially through reputable websites such as NCDHHS.gov.
Know that we are taking every precaution possible – we know you are as well. As a reminder, consider the following recommendations below to keep our students as safe as possible.
- Stay home when sick. Your child should be free from fever, vomiting, and diarrhea for 24 hours without the use of medication before returning to school. A temperature is a fever when it is greater than 100 degrees.
- Wash hands often with warm water and soap for 20 seconds. Alternatively, use hand sanitizers with 60%-90% alcohol for 20 seconds if soap and water is unavailable.
- Cover coughs and sneezes with tissues or your elbow and then wash hands.
- Avoid touching your mouth, nose or eyes with unwashed hands.
- Disinfect commonly touched surfaces with household disinfectant, following label instructions.
- And please remember – this isn’t a time to panic, it’s a time to take precautions.
Thank you for your support and partnership as we work together to maintain a healthy learning environment.

Arapahoe Charter School Welcomes Special Guests
On Wednesday, Nov. 13, ACS High Schools students were greeted by two invited guests – BOLO and Stihl. The pair are specially trained canines whose job is to search the school for narcotics, none of which were found at ACS.
“We’re very pleased with the outcome – an outcome we know every parent wants to hear,” said Chris Watson, ACS Executive Director. “We are committed to keeping our school safe and drug free and will continue to be proactive in our efforts.”
The planned search of eight classrooms took about 20 minutes after students were asked to leave their book bags on desks and exit the classroom. Then canines BOLO and Stihl got to work checking for narcotics.
“This was a collaborative effort involving the Sheriff’s Departments in both Pamlico and Craven counties,” said ACS School Resource Officer Jeremy Wilkinson. “These searches are an excellent way to discover potential problems in a non-invasive manner. When drug dogs are used to search for contraband in schools, we do not open backpacks or inspect students’ belongings unless the dog signals that drugs are present.”
“It helps to keep drugs out of schools, and it allows the police to be seen in schools without there necessarily being something negative going on,” said Upper School Director Cody Edwards. “In short it is another way to keep our students safe while on campus.”

Early Release on Friday, Sept. 27 at 11:40 a.m.
Friday, September 27 will be an early release day. Students will be dismissed at 11:40 a.m. and there will be no after-school program at ACS that day.Arapahoe Charter School Exceeded Growth Schoolwide; Jumps Six Points
Students, staff and administrators at Arapahoe Charter School School have reason to celebrate following the release of North Carolina’s Schools 2018-2019 Accountability Report. Schoolwide, ACS not only met but exceeded growth by jumping 6 points, just shy of a B rating. ACS is one of only 28 percent of schools statewide that exceeded growth schoolwide.
Executive Director Chris Watson said he is appreciative of the time and dedication of all the teachers, staff and administrators to see such a positive increase.
“These results don’t just happen. It takes focused work on the part of all the teachers and administrators,” Mr. Watson said. “There’s always more work to do and we will continue to teach the curriculum at a high level while establishing positive relationships with the students.”
Twenty-eight percent is also an important number when it comes to graduation rates with ACS ranking higher than 72 percent of the state’s 517 high schools.
“These results are very encouraging but only a beginning,” said Mr. Cody Edwards, Upper School Director. “The hard work of our staff has established a trajectory that will enable us to grow each and every year.”
Rounding out the school’s administrative team, Lower School Director Ms. Julie Edwards, gives the staff high marks as well.
“We are excited that the hard work of our employees and students has proven to be worthwhile,” said Ms. Julie Edwards, Lower School Director. “We will continue our efforts to grow every child, every day, in every classroom.”
You can find information on how the school performance grade is calculated at http://www.ncpublicschools.org/src/resources/faq.

“At the end of the process, our search led us right back to our own doorstep,” said Tim Murray, Board Chair.
“Our goal is excellence in everything we do and determining the best administrative approach is at the top of the list. After looking at all the options we decided no one job or position is more significant or important than another – it’s a team effort going forward.”
The new administrative structure includes Chris Watson, Executive Director; Julie Edwards, Lower School Director (Kindergarten through 5th grade); Cody Edwards, Upper School Director (6th through 12th grade).
